The best apps to learn European Portuguese in 2026

Twenty apps, sorted by which Portuguese they actually teach.

7 Oct 2026Ana Salgado

Most big language apps teach Brazilian Portuguese and never say so. Here are 20 apps sorted by whether they actually teach the Portuguese of Portugal, with a screenshot of each and what it is good for.

Why "Portuguese" usually means Brazilian

Open Duolingo, Babbel, Busuu or Rocket Languages, pick Portuguese, and you get Brazil: the vocabulary, the pronunciation, você and estou falando. That is a fine course if you are moving to São Paulo. If you are moving to Lisbon, you will learn to say things people understand and still not understand what they say back, because European Portuguese swallows its vowels and runs its words together in a way no Brazilian course prepares you for.

So the first question for any app is not how good it is, but which Portuguese it teaches. The list below is sorted on that question. The first group was built for Portugal. The second group is general tools where you can choose European content or make your own. The third group is the big names that only teach Brazilian, listed so you know before you pay. The last two are about talking to people.

Two more things every one of the three guides we drew on agrees about. Apps work best as part of a wider routine, not as the whole system: a course or a tutor gives the structure, the app gives you something to do with spare minutes. And speaking with real people is still the fastest way to improve, whatever the app's speech recognition tells you.

How we judged them

Five things matter for Portugal specifically, and we checked each app against all five:

  1. Native European audio. Recorded by speakers from Portugal, not synthesised and not Brazilian.
  2. European forms. tu and você used the Portuguese way, estar a + infinitive, comboio and pequeno-almoço, not trem and café da manhã.
  3. A structure you can follow. Levels (A1, A2, B1 and on) and a path, rather than a pile of decks.
  4. Speaking practice. Something that makes you open your mouth, and checks what came out.
  5. Portugal in it. Culture, places and situations from Portugal, so the sentences are ones you will actually use.

All twenty at a glance

Prices are in US dollars as published on 7 October 2026, and may have changed.

Built for European Portuguese

These were written for Portugal from the first lesson. If you only install one app, it comes from this group.

Speeku: European Portuguese

Built for European Portuguese$24.90 one time, no subscriptionAndroidspeeku.com
Speeku's European Portuguese page: From Olá to a real conversation, with a phone showing a lesson
speeku.com/european-portuguese

Speeku is a Duolingo-shaped course that teaches the Portuguese of Lisbon and Porto and nothing else: tu and você the Portuguese way, o comboio, o pequeno-almoço, estou a falar. More than 990 short lessons take you from A1 to B1, and the 11,400 exercises in them keep changing shape so the fortieth lesson does not feel like the first: pick the picture, build the sentence, fill the gap, play the scene, fill in the verb table, sort into buckets, 58 kinds in all.

Every word and sentence is spoken aloud by a cast of recorded voices, so your ear is trained on Portugal's sounds from day one. A built-in dictionary of 7,300 entries carries European pronunciation and full verb tables. Flashcards are built from the words you have learned and bring back first the ones you are closest to forgetting.

The speaking drills, in 78 of the lessons, listen to what you say and check that it was the right word, on your phone, with nothing recorded or uploaded. Speeku is honest about what that means: it tells you which word it heard, it does not pretend to grade your accent.

The whole thing works offline. The app does not even ask for permission to use the internet, which makes it the one course on this list that works on the plane over and in the metro once you land. There are no streaks and nothing that tells you off for missing a day.

Good for
  • A structured path from zero to B1, written for Portugal
  • Recorded native audio on every line
  • Learning with no signal and no account
Watch out
  • A large download, because the audio and dictionary ship with the app
  • Speech checking confirms the word, not the accent

Practice Portuguese

Built for European Portuguese$172.49 / year or $16.99 / monthWeb, iOS, Androidpracticeportuguese.com
Practice Portuguese home page: Learn Portuguese from Portugal, with a yellow Lisbon tram
practiceportuguese.com

Made in Portugal, and the app most often recommended by people who live there. Portugalist calls it "one of the few apps that really feels built for people learning European Portuguese rather than Portuguese in general", and if you want one tool that covers listening, vocabulary and grammar together, this is probably it. Verb conjugations come with audio, there is a Smart Review playlist that resurfaces what you got wrong, and the podcast episodes and videos are real European Portuguese at real speed, which is exactly the skill the other apps leave you without.

Its weakness is the shape of the product rather than the content. It is web-first, with little gamification and no conversational speaking practice, and it does not walk you through a full curriculum the way a course does. Portugal Lifestyle Pro's verdict was "best listening library, not a full course", and most learners end up using it as the listening half of their routine rather than the whole of it.

Good for
  • Hearing fast, connected European speech early
  • Verbs and grammar explained with Portuguese audio
Watch out
  • Web-first; thin on speaking practice
  • Not a step-by-step curriculum on its own
3

Portugal Lifestyle Pro

Built for European PortugueseFree download; All Access $49.99 / year or $9.99 / monthiOS, Android, webportugallifestylepro.com
Portugal Lifestyle Pro home page: Learn European Portuguese the fun way, with a phone showing lesson tiles
portugallifestylepro.com

A newer entrant that claims more than 500 lessons structured on the CEFR scale from A1 to C2, with audio recorded in Lisbon and Porto, twenty-odd games, an AI conversation partner and a thick layer of Portugal itself: districts, culture, and even a guide to the AIMA immigration process. It is pitched at people who are moving to Portugal rather than people learning Portuguese for its own sake, and the culture content is where it stands apart.

The only full review of it that we found is its own, so take the "no cons" verdict with the salt it deserves, and try the free tier before paying. The AI conversation partner is something nobody else in this group offers; whether the AI speaks like a person from Porto is the thing to test.

Good for
  • People relocating to Portugal who want the paperwork and the language in one place
  • A CEFR path that goes past B1
Watch out
  • Young app, few independent reviews
  • Premium pricing is not published up front
4

Pimsleur Portuguese (European)

Dedicated EP course$19.99 / month subscription, or $300 one time for the complete European courseiOS, Android, webpimsleur.com
Pimsleur's European Portuguese page: Discover how to learn Portuguese (European) with the Pimsleur Method
pimsleur.com/learn-portuguese-european

Pimsleur is one of the few big names with a separate European Portuguese course, and the method is as good as its reputation: thirty-minute audio lessons that prompt you to speak before you feel ready, spaced so that the phrase comes back just as you are about to lose it. Portugalist describes it as "approachable, well-structured, and designed to be done in your car", and it is the quickest way we know to build pronunciation confidence in the first weeks.

The catch is scope. The European course stops at two levels where the Brazilian one has five, which lands you around A1 to A2; it is audio only, so you never see a word written; and there is no vocabulary review, no games, no culture. Do it first, then move on.

Good for
  • Speaking out loud from the first lesson
  • Learning while driving or walking
Watch out
  • Only two European levels; tops out early
  • Nothing to read or review
5

Michel Thomas Portuguese

European Portuguese$152 one timeAudio appmichelthomas.com
Michel Thomas Portuguese page with Start, Foundation and Intermediate course tiles
michelthomas.com

Another audio method, but with a different aim. Where Pimsleur drills phrases, Michel Thomas sits you in a recorded classroom with two other students and builds up how the language works, so that by the end of the course you are constructing sentences you have never heard rather than repeating ones you have. Portugalist calls it "a low-stress way of getting to grips with how the language works", and it suits beginners and false beginners who want to understand the machinery before they memorise anything.

It is a course, not an app in the daily-habit sense: little interactivity, and a one-off price rather than a subscription. Pair it with something that gives you vocabulary.

Good for
  • Understanding sentence building without grammar tables
  • False beginners coming back to the language
Watch out
  • Little to tap or practise between lessons
  • Expensive for what is a few hours of audio
6

Linguno

European and Brazilian audioFree, no paid tierWeblinguno.com
Linguno home page listing conjugation, listening and word exercises for seven languages
linguno.com

A free web app that quietly does several things the paid apps charge for: vocabulary with spaced repetition, verb conjugation drills, crosswords, and listening exercises built from more than a hundred thousand recordings. You choose whether to hear European or Brazilian speakers, which is rarer than it should be. Portugalist's note was that it is "hard to find other apps that offer listening and grammar exercises" this way at no cost.

It runs in a browser and looks like it, and there is no course path, so it is a practice room rather than a teacher.

Good for
  • Free conjugation and listening practice with European voices
Watch out
  • No mobile app and no curriculum
7

Frazely

European Portuguese$24.99 / 6 months or $8.99 / month; a selection of stories freeWeb, iOS, Androidfrazely.com
Frazely home page: Learn languages in context, the natural way, with a Portuguese (European) tile
frazely.com

Most apps leave you unable to read anything longer than a sentence. Frazely is about reading: short graded texts in context, with the vocabulary unpacked as you go, and it lists European Portuguese as its own language rather than a dialect toggle. Portugalist's take is fair: it is "not likely to be the first app most people download, but it can be a helpful extra once you've got the basics down".

Good for
  • Building reading stamina after A1
Watch out
  • A supplement, not a starting point
8

Conjuguemos

European forms includedFree for learners (schools pay for class tools)Webconjuguemos.com
Conjuguemos home page: Teach language through fun activities and games
conjuguemos.com

Built for school classrooms, free for everyone, and the least painful way to drill one tense at a time. Pick the present, the pretérito perfeito or the subjunctive, pick the verbs, and race the clock. It is "much more fun than learning verb tables", and it includes the tu and vós forms that Brazilian-first apps drop. Nothing else is here: no vocabulary, no listening.

Good for
  • Ten minutes of conjugation when a tense will not stick
Watch out
  • Verbs only, browser only

General tools where you choose the European content

Flashcard and media apps are only as European as the deck or the song you pick. Most have good European Portuguese content if you look for it, and none of them will give you a course.

9

Memrise

Community EP decks$61.99 / year or $24.99 / month; limited free tieriOS, Android, webmemrise.com
Memrise home page: Understand native speakers. Sound more like them.
memrise.com

The friendliest flashcard app, and the one Portugalist recommends over Anki for most people. The official courses are built by Memrise's own team, but the European Portuguese decks you will want are mostly community made, and quality varies wildly from one to the next. Pro adds "Learn with Locals" video clips of real speakers, which is the feature worth paying for. The games get repetitive and there is no path from A1 to a conversation: as Portugal Lifestyle Pro puts it, "flashcards, not a curriculum".

Good for
  • Memorising vocabulary and set phrases without setting anything up
Watch out
  • Uneven European decks; the best features sit behind Pro
10

Anki

Whatever you put in itFree on desktop and Android; $24.99 one time on iPhoneDesktop, Android, iOSapps.ankiweb.net
Anki home page: Remembering is easier with Anki
apps.ankiweb.net

The serious learner's flashcard program: open source, infinitely customisable, and the spaced repetition engine that most other apps imitate. It is also "nowhere near as user-friendly as Memrise" and expects you to build or vet your own decks. Actual Fluency's one line against it is the one that matters here: there is no opportunity to practise speaking. If you want control and will put up with a learning curve, nothing beats it for making words stay.

Good for
  • Your own cards from your own lessons, reviewed forever
Watch out
  • A learning curve and an evening of setup
11

Drops

European Portuguese optionFree for 5 minutes a day, with ads; Premium $64.99 / yeariOS, Androidlanguagedrops.com
Drops home page: Language learning made easy, quick daily lessons
languagedrops.com

Five-minute sessions of pictures and swipes, beautifully drawn, with European Portuguese as a separate choice. It is the app people reach for when they want a Duolingo that is not Brazilian, and the honest view from both guides that cover it is that the content is "often incredibly basic": vocabulary by topic, no grammar at all, and ads in the free version. Fine as a warm-up, not as the main meal.

Good for
  • Topic vocabulary in the five minutes you have
Watch out
  • No grammar, no sentences, ads unless you pay
12

LingoClip (LyricsTraining)

European and Brazilian songs mixedFree with ads; Premium $29.99 / year or $4.99 / monthWeb, iOS, Androidlingoclip.com
LingoClip home page: Enjoy learning languages with music
lingoclip.com

Play a music video, fill in the missing lyrics before the line passes. Formerly LyricsTraining, it is "definitely more of a fun extra than a core learning tool", but Portugalist's reason for keeping it in the list is a good one: "anything that gets you listening more is a good thing, particularly in European Portuguese where fast, connected speech can take a while to get used to." Filter for Portuguese artists, or you will be training on Brazilian pop.

Good for
  • Listening practice that does not feel like practice
Watch out
  • You have to pick the European songs yourself
13

PortuguesePod101

Mostly BrazilianPremium $10 / month ($5.50 on a 24-month plan); limited free tierWeb, iOS, Androidportuguesepod101.com
PortuguesePod101 home page: Learn Portuguese, thousands of lessons
portuguesepod101.com

More than 850 podcast and video lessons with well-structured grammar notes and downloadable audio, updated constantly. Actual Fluency rates it near the top for Portuguese in general, with two caveats: the free tier is very limited and "too much English is used" in the lessons. The hosts are Brazilian; there is a small amount of European material, but the course is not built around it.

Good for
  • Grammar explained in long form, on a commute
Watch out
  • Brazilian by default; relentless marketing emails

The big names that only teach Brazilian

None of these is a bad app. Each one is a bad fit for Portugal, and none of them tells you so on the download screen. Portugal Lifestyle Pro's description of the result is accurate: people who finish a long Duolingo streak and "can't parse spoken European Portuguese".

14

Duolingo

Brazilian onlyFree with ads; Super Duolingo $83.99 / year or $12.99 / monthiOS, Android, webduolingo.com
Duolingo home page: The most fun way to learn languages, chess, and more
duolingo.com

The best habit machine ever built for language learning, and the course is 100% Brazilian: the vocabulary, the recordings, the grammar. Everything that makes it work, the streaks, the short lessons, the stories, works just as well here, and the result is that you arrive in Lisbon with excellent Brazilian. Actual Fluency adds the usual complaints, out-of-context sentences and a tone that "may feel a tad childish for more mature students". If a streak is what keeps you going, use it for the habit and get your European Portuguese elsewhere.

Good for
  • Showing up every day
Watch out
  • Wrong variety, with no European option at all
15

Babbel

Brazilian course$89.99 / year or $17.99 / monthiOS, Android, webbabbel.com
Babbel home page: Which language do you want to learn?
babbel.com

Short, conversation-led lessons of ten to fifteen minutes, with speech recognition for pronunciation and a method that is more deliberate than Duolingo's. The Portuguese course is Brazilian, which is the same dealbreaker in a more grown-up package: "solid method, Brazilian course". The activities also get tedious over time and there are fewer lessons than for the bigger languages.

Good for
  • Structured lessons that explain what they teach
Watch out
  • Brazilian; limited course length
16

Busuu

Brazilian PortugueseFree with ads; Premium $79.99 / year or $9.99 / monthiOS, Android, webbusuu.com
Busuu home page: New language, new opportunities, new you
busuu.com

Actual Fluency's top pick for Portuguese overall: all four skills, personalised study plans, travel and pronunciation courses, and a community feature where native speakers correct your written and spoken exercises. That last part is the one thing here that no other app does. The course is Brazilian, much is locked behind Premium, and even its fans call the content "quite limited" for getting to fluency.

Good for
  • Corrections from real people inside the app
Watch out
  • Brazilian; the useful parts cost money
17

Rocket Portuguese

Brazilian only$149.95 one timeWeb, iOS, Androidrocketlanguages.com
Rocket Portuguese page: The ingenious way to learn Portuguese is the key to truly connecting with Brazilian people
rocketlanguages.com/portuguese

A complete package: audio course, culture lessons, language lessons, games, tests and a voice-recognition tool, for one lifetime payment that is reasonable for how much is in it. Its own headline says who it is for, "connecting with Brazilian people", and the voice recognition is rated poor. If Brazil were the destination it would be near the top of this list.

Good for
  • A full Brazilian course bought once
Watch out
  • Brazilian exclusively; weak speech recognition
18

Rosetta Stone

Brazilian Portuguese$119.99 / year or $44.99 / 3 monthsiOS, Android, webrosettastone.com
Rosetta Stone's App Store listing with screenshots of its immersion lessons
Rosetta Stone on the App Store

Twenty-five years of pure immersion: pictures and Portuguese, never a word of English. It is comprehensive, it is priced per language rather than per account, and the no-translation method either suits you or drives you up the wall. The Portuguese is Brazilian.

Good for
  • Learners who want to think in the language from day one
Watch out
  • Brazilian; one subscription buys one language

Apps that get you talking to people

Every guide ends the same way: an app for daily structure, and real conversation as soon as you can hold one. These two are how you find the conversation.

19

italki

Filter for tutors from PortugalPer lesson; most tutors from Portugal charge $10 to $25 an hourWeb, iOS, Androiditalki.com
italki home page: Start real learning, see clear progress
italki.com

A marketplace of tutors, with plenty from Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve, and the "single fastest way to improve speaking". It is also the most expensive hour on this page and gives you nothing between lessons, which is why the sensible plan is an app for the daily work and a tutor once you reach A2 and have something to say. Pick a tutor whose profile says Portugal, not just Portuguese.

Good for
  • Speaking, corrected by a person, on your schedule
Watch out
  • Costs add up; no structure on its own
20

Tandem

Filter for partners in PortugalFree with ads; Pro $69.99 / year or $14.99 / monthiOS, Androidtandem.net
Tandem home page: Speak with Tandem, master any language by actually chatting with real people
tandem.net

Language exchange: you help someone with your language, they help you with theirs, by text, voice or video, with translation and correction tools built into the chat. Actual Fluency's line is that it is "ideal for those who are extroverts", and you need enough Portuguese to say something first. Free, and the cheapest way to hear how people in Portugal actually write and talk.

Good for
  • Real messages from real people, for nothing
Watch out
  • Needs a base level and some nerve

A plan that works

Start with a course built for Portugal. Speeku or Portugal Lifestyle Pro give you the path and the daily lesson; Pimsleur's two European levels are a good first month if you learn best by ear. Add Practice Portuguese for listening the moment the fast speech starts to frustrate you, because it will. Keep a flashcard app (Memrise or Anki) for the words that will not stick. When you reach A2, book a tutor from Portugal on italki or find a partner on Tandem, and let the apps become what they are best at: something useful to do with the ten minutes on the bus.

And whatever you choose, check the variety before you pay. If the app does not say Portugal, it means Brazil.
