We love all languages
Why we build apps for the languages big apps skip.
Today we're proud to be launching Speeku. 🎉
Speeku makes language apps. That's all we do, and we focus solely on language learning. We don't plan to do anything else.
Nobody builds for small languages
Want to learn Spanish? Easy. There are dozens of apps. Some of them are pretty good.
Now try Swiss German.
You'll find almost nothing. The big apps teach you High German. Then you move to Zurich. Nobody there talks like that.
Why do they skip it? Because they're big. To an app with hundreds of millions of users, a few hundred thousand learners is a rounding error. Shareholders will not care.
But a small language isn't small to the person learning it. It's the only one that matters. 💙
Variants are languages
Most apps teach Brazilian Portuguese and call it Portuguese.
Fine for Rio. Not for Lisbon. In Lisbon a train is a comboio. There's a formality distinction between tu and você. They say estou a fazer, instead of using the gerund. Learn the wrong one and you'll get by. You'll also sound like you learned it from a Brazilian Portuguese app.
So at Speeku they're two courses. Two apps. Neither is the other with a few words swapped.
What we make
One app per language.
It works offline. Completely.
No account. No sign-up. You open it and you learn.
No subscription.
There's a real dictionary inside.
And you speak. Out loud. The app checks you on your phone. Your voice never leaves it.
One time payment at a reasonable price, the price of a book.
Learning, not playing
Many language apps nowadays have a subscription model, which means that they need to keep you hooked so that you keep paying them. They end up not teaching you the language. They teach you to open the app.
Streaks. Leagues. Gems. A guilt trip at 11pm. Having to tap your phone 8 times to open a chest to go to the next lesson. That's not language learning. 🙄
The new trend is the AI tutor. You ask a chatbot and hope it's right. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. You can't tell which. A teacher can't be confidently wrong to someone who can't check.
We do it the old way. Linguists design every course. Every answer in the app was decided by a person.
That doesn't mean boring. Lessons are short. A few minutes each. Fun. Grammar comes in small doses, right when you need it.
Price
Cheap. Actually cheap. 💸
No subscription model. We're all tired of signing up for a month, forgetting about it, only to later find out that we paid $200 for an app we never used.
One-time payment. Like the good old days of software. You buy it once and it's yours, forever.
The price of a language learning book: $19-29 depending on the language.
Thank you
That's it. That's Speeku. 🦜
Thank you for reading this far, and for caring about learning a language properly. We built Speeku for people like you.
We love all languages. We hope you'll love learning one with us. 💙
