How to say how are you in European Portuguese

What people say, and how it sounds.

The answer
to anyonetudo bem/ˈtudu ˈbɐ̃j̃/
to a friend (tu)como estás
polite (você)como está

The short answer

Tudo bem? (all good?) is the one you can say to anyone, and its answer is tudo bem again. Como estás? is for someone you address as tu: a friend, a child, a colleague your age. Como está? is for everyone else.

The Portuguese usually attach it to the greeting: Olá, tudo bem?

TOO-du BÃY

Tudo is TOO-du, the final vowel barely there. Bem is nasal, close to bãy, with no m at the end. In estás the stress is on the á and the final s is a soft sh.
