How to say good afternoon in European Portuguese

What people say, and how it sounds.

The answer
from lunch until darkboa tarde/ˈboɐ ˈtaɾdɨ/

The short answer

Boa tarde is the greeting from lunch until it gets dark, to anyone at all. It also works as a goodbye in the same hours: Adeus, boa tarde!

Add the person's name after a comma: Boa tarde, Rosa!

BO-a TAR-d

Boa is two syllables, BO-a. In tarde the final e all but vanishes, so the word ends on the consonant: TARD.
